Just what makes sand?

September 12, 2017

Consider the parrot fish. You might recognize them by their big teeth. Yes, teeth. They mostly hang around coral reefs, chewing up the coral to get at algae. These guys play a part in maintaining the reef ecosystem by preventing too much algal growth. When their bodies break down coral, they create a fine sand. And then, well, nature calls. Many fish play a similar role in creating our favorite toes-in-the-sand beaches. So next time you sink your feet into soft grains… perhaps on one of our tropical adventure cruises?
