This sailing trip starts in Balboa, the Pacific-side port of the Panama Canal. With Panama City only a short distance away it is the perfect place to begin this 3 week non-stop sailing adventure! Learn all about the techniques of square rig sailing and complete the nearly 3000 miles to San Diego, U.S.A.
It will take quite some effort from crew and vessel to sail the ship to this destination. We invite you to join us and to be part of this special experience.
It will take quite some effort from crew and vessel to sail the ship to her destination in California, U.S.A. For 3 weeks non-stop – no ports will be visited along the way – you will be working together with the crew and learn all about the techniques of square rig sailing. At sea not one day will be the same and completing the nearly 3000 miles in total will be an unforgettable experience.
Please note that at this time of year it is expected that there will be a number of days with unfavorable (head)winds in which case the engine will be turned on to guarantee our scheduled arrival date. However with certainty we can say that there will be enough to do and many instructions to learn from our crew and captain.
Imagine standing on the lookout surrounded by nothing but the sea. The waves, being rough every now and then, maybe some other ships and sometimes even dolphins playfully dancing just ahead of the bow. On the other hand, one could also relax reading a book in the long room. We have a well-stocked library on board.
The meals are enjoyed together with the crew in the longroom at times adjusted to the watches. Every evening the captain will give a short briefing of the mileage achieved on the day before, the mileage still to go and any other points of interest.
The ship’s crew stand watch in three shifts. These shifts are called the Red Watch (from 12- 4 AM and PM), the White Watch (from 4-8 AM and PM) and the Blue Watch (from 8-12 AM and PM).
We welcome you to join one of these watches. This way you can fully experience how things work on a ship like the Stad Amsterdam. Setting or furling the sails, keeping lookout, setting the course or standing watch: you can participate in all of it.
As a member of the Red Watch you can enjoy the peacefulness of being at sea and the endless starry sky. In the White Watch you will experience the break of dawn like you never did before, whilst in the Blue Watch you can enjoy the sailing while maintaining a regular day and night rhythm.
On February 8th you will be part of Clipper Stad Amsterdam’s first arrival at San Diego. In this major American city your sailing adventure will come to an end.
San Diego is located in Southern California close to the Mexican border. The climate is very pleasant with lots of sunshine and mild temperatures. When you have the time, you may want to visit the famous San Diego Zoo or stroll through the historic center to admire the Spanish architecture of colonial times.
Would you rather spend your time relaxing? San Diego has many miles of beaches ideal for surfing and sunbathing. And when the San Diego Maritime Museum is on your list of things-to-do, the “Star of India” will most likely have your attention. This ship has many similarities to the Clipper Stad Amsterdam.
