What’s this Raja Ampat place you keep hearing about?

September 23, 2016

Only one of the world’s most beautiful, under-visited and undisturbed patches of paradise on the planet, that’s what. The only way to take it all in, however, is by going and seeing for yourselves, which SeaTrek of course can make happen on a whole host of different cruises. But for now, you can make do with an image of the boys at play in a bay of the clearest most pristine water imaginable on this good green earth.

Earlier this month just off the southeast coast of Bali on the island of Nusa Penida, an exceptional dedication ceremony took place near the mouth of the holy Giri Putri Cave. Led by Bayu Wirayudha, President of The Friends of the National Parks Foundation, a new sign (created and donated by SeaTrek) was unveiled by Prince Constantijn and Princess Laurentien of the Netherlands, drawing attention to the cave’s special status as home of the very rare Giri Putri Cave Crab (Karstama emdi), which has enjoyed a unique distinction ever since they were discovered there in 1993 by FFI’s Dr. Tony Whitten and Peter Eng. The new sign informs visitors of the need for extra care and attention for the conservation and spiritual status of the crabs, as they are considered to be not only a rare species, but also the protectors of the temple inside.

Whale sharks are the gentle giants of the ichthyological world, and their intrinsic value is increasing more and more each day as many a local fisherman sees the financial benefits of keeping them alive for tourists to come and visit, and in some cases even providing part of their catch to feed the giants to keep them close. SeaTrek is taking this to heart and we are running an exploratory trip in March 2017 that will cruise for 12-days from Gorontalo in Sulawesi – where we hope to have an up-close encounter with the elusive whale sharks – all the way down the eastern Sulawesi coast, through Wakitobi National Park, and finishing in Flores with Komodo Dragons. Priced at the low cost of $5,400, this will almost certainly be a sell out, so enquire now for a sneak preview of the as-yet-unpublished itinerary.

If you want to know more, here’s a link to a great article and video where you can watch them cruise around Indonesia.

For all cruises booked and taken between now and the end of our 2016 season, (which finishes in January 2017) we are offering all our agents an additional 3% commissions per person. Pay particular attention to our Raja Ampat Snorkelling & Paddling cruises; this is fun like you never knew it, with loads of departures to choose from November thru January.

If you have a group of friends who want to come cruise with us then come and check out our Charter Page, which tells you all you need to know about what we offer and where we go, and includes a handful of sample itineraries to make it easier for you to see what’s on offer.
